On May 25, 2008 at 3 PM, in Krakow’s Henryk Jordan City Park – the first ever monument dedicated to Witold Pilecki was unveiled. The unveiling ceremony is another event marking the 60th anniversary of the murder of Poland’s great hero. The ceremony was attended by the Pilecki family as well as soldiers of the Polish Army, scouts, representatives of local authority and veteran organizations.
It was preceded by a Holy Mass carried out by father Capuchin Jerzy Pająk – chaplain of the Home Army soldiers. The monument – carved by an artist sculptor – Józef Opala, was uncovered by the children of the Rotamaster Mrs. Zofia Pilecka-Optułowicz and Mr. Andrzej Pilecki. An ‘homage’ was paid to the “Volunteer to Auschwitz” in the name of the Institute of National Remembrance by Mr. Dariusz Gorajczyk.

The sculpture was placed next to the one of General Władysław Anders. Soon, the alley in which the two monuments are placed, will be honored by sculptures of the following figures:
Karolina Lanckorońska, General Leopold Okulicki „Niedźwiadek”, General Stanisław Maczek, Saint Maksymilian Maria Kolbe and Henryk Sienkiewicz.

The initiator and sponsor of the entire project is Mr. Kazimierz Cholewa – the President of Henryk Jordan’s City Park.
